Adventure Sunderland is a charitable trust, uniquely operating and partnered alongside Sunderland Marina. Based on Roker seafront we are ideally placed to offer a wide range of water sports and land based activities.
Established in 1996, taking over from the council operated Roker Watersports, we have developed into much more than a beach based watersports centre. We are now a fully operational outdoor education and activity centre and can provide services for everybody.
We have expanded to include many many different activities both on the water and on land, locally and further afield, indoors and out so everybody can find something for them. We give the people of Sunderland and further away, affordable access to adventurous activities.
Our mission is delivered by full-time, permanent staff who really know the area and our activities to ensure all desired outcomes are met. Our staff are all chosen for their wide range of experience, qualifications and skill in the activities we do – we don’t use trainees or volunteers to deliver sessions, just time served professionals.
Our equipment is all regularly renewed and updated to give our clients access to the best they can get. Our multi-million pound facilities complement this by giving a start-to-finish high quality experience.
Overall this has led to our client base expanding significantly year on year as people find out about us and realise the range, value for money and high quality of the service they will get with us.
We look forward to working with more folks wanting to get active and have adventures for many years to come!
Our centre principal Paul has been enjoying the outdoors for a very long time. He started camping and climbing with his dad in 1966 - he was only 2 then though! Unlike his climber dad, Paul focused on paddlesports when he was younger and ended up representing England in Canoe Slalom in 1982. It’s all been downhill since then, literally sometimes on a bike or skis!
After working as a scientist for 20 years and enjoying adventures in his free time all over the world, Paul changed career to be able to pass on his lifelong passion for outdoor activities to others. After working at some leading outdoor education centres he now uses the project and safety management skills he’s gained to keep The Centre running smoothly. But he does still get out with groups sometimes – especially if its sunny and its coasteering!
Mike is our centre manager, it’s his job to make sure everything runs smoothly. Mike calls upon many years of experience to do this, before Adventure Sunderland he was manager at ‘The Mill on The Brue’ and at ‘Outward Bound’ in Wales before then.
He’s been doing this for 30 years now and we are lucky to have him on the team where his level headed and practical approach to all of the many day to day issues thrown at him ensures the centre delivers the high quality of experience our clients have come to expect.
Mike’s career in the activity sector is based on a lifelong passion for adventurous activities. He’s a keen climber and has scaled all the classic local crags and chalked up a solo sea kayak expedition around the entire coast of Wales!
As you would expect, Mike holds qualifying awards in delivering all of our wide range activities and holds higher level awards in coaching canoeing and sea kayaking. Mike loves to pass on his skills and knowledge to budding sea kayakers and really enjoys teaching young children all about our wonderful coastline as our Beach School teacher!
Our instructor Tom comes from London originally – but he’s been all over working and enjoying outdoor activities! Tom spent a long time at a leading activity provider working in Scotland and France leading trips on the local rivers there.
He helped to train new instructors while on his travels and uses this experience when coaching our own BTEC students. Some of our BTEC students have left and are now following in Tom’s footsteps and traveling the world themselves helping others enjoy challenging activities!
Tom has been at Adventure Sunderland since 2016 and has an intimate knowledge of all the venues we use and the activities we do which he uses to really increase the impact of the sessions he delivers. He backs this up with an impressive range of qualifications.
Jaz joined us in 2019 as a seasonal instructor for the summer, but we were so impressed we kept her! Jaz has worked at a number of centres across Europe. She has developed a passion for reviewing and personal development specifically Hard and soft skills to young people that our challenging activities can offer.
Working as part of the training team for a big outdoor company, Jaz developed her personal NGB qualifications in a variety of different Adventurous activities.
Her background also includes time working with some of the hardest to reach young people and managing the challenging behavior associated with this client group. Her calm manner with which she discusses issues with these young people really comes across and helps ensure sessions run smoothly and the young people get maximum benefit from the activity.
